The1912 Summer Olympics, officially known as theGames of the V Olympiad, were an internationalmulti-sport eventheld inStockholm,Sweden, between 5 May and 27 July 1912. Twenty-eight nations and 2,408 competitors, including 48 women, competed in 102 events in 14 sports. With the exception of tennis (starting on 5 May) and football and shooting (both starting on 29 June), the games were held within a month with an official opening on 6 July. It was the last Olympics to issue solid gold medals and, withJapansdebut, the first time anAsiannation participated. Stockholm was the only bid for the games, and was selected in 1909.

The games were the first to haveart competitions,womens diving,womens swimming, and the first to feature both thedecathlonand the newpentathlon, both won byJim Thorpe. Electric timing was introduced inathletics, while the host country disallowedboxing.Figure skatingwas rejected by the organizers because they wanted to promote theNordic Games.United Stateswon the most gold medals (25), whileSwedenwon the most medals overall (65)

The graphic symbol of the Stockholm Games shows in the middle the head of the Pallas Athene. Around the head is written in Swedish: “Olympic Games in Stockholm 1912”. Below are the three crowns, the national emblem of Sweden; in the upper part there are two, in the lower part in the middle the third crown. They usually appear in yellow on a light blue background. This national symbol of Sweden can also be found in the country’s coat of arms, at official appearances of the monarchy, in the Imperial Diet, at Swedish embassies, on the emblem of the Swedish Olympic Committee and in many other places.This graphic symbol is not recognized by the IOC and therefore no official emblem.
